De Bluegrass-traditie is springlevend! Dat is mede te danken aan artiesten als Steve Earle, Allison Kraus en Dolly Parton, maar ook aan het grote succes van films als O Brother Where Art Thou en The Broken Circle Breakdown.
Zaterdag 4 maart vult de muziek van het bluegrass-trio The COWPOKES dan ook D’n Hiemel aan de Bernardusstraat 24a in Maastricht.
THE COWPOKES – de routiniers Charly Jansen, Edwin Herkert en Peter Noppen - spelen al jaren deze traditionele Amerikaanse folk, old-time country en bluegrass-muziek.
Op hun eigen, oorspronkelijke wijze vertolken ze de prachtige traditionals, veelal met Ierse invloeden, met meerstemmige zang, gitaar, banjo en mandoline.
Native sound
Zanger en mandoline-speler Charly Jansen heeft vele jaren in de VS gewoond waar hij zich de 'native sound' eigen heeft gemaakt. Hij toerde door Europa in bands als The Rough Riders, Parking Lot Pickers en Chicken Pie. Edwin Herkert is een zeer bekende banjo-speler, onder andere in de toonaangevende Bluegrassband Groundspeed. Ook Peter Noppen, zanger/gitarist, heeft jaren geleden zijn hart verloren aan de traditionele Amerikaanse muziek; hij speelt ook in de Countryrockband Yeeehaa!
De band gooide hoge ogen bij Holland’s Got Talent in 2019 en speelde door de jaren heen op vele bekende festivals, zoals Muddy Roots Europe (BE), De Zwarte Cross, EWOB Bluegrass en Mañana Mañana.

The Bluegrass tradition is alive and well! This is partly due to artists such as Steve Earle, Allison Kraus and Dolly Parton, but also to the great success of films such as O Brother Where Art Thou and The Broken Circle Breakdown.
On Saturday 4 March, the music of the bluegrass trio The COWPOKES will fill D'n Hiemel at Bernardusstraat 24a in Maastricht.

Routines
The Cowpokes - the veterans Charly Jansen, Edwin Herkert and Peter Noppen - have been playing this traditional American folk, old-time country and bluegrass music for years.
In their own, original way they interpret the beautiful traditionals, often with Irish influences, with polyphonic vocals, guitar, banjo and mandolin.

Singer and mandolin player Charly Jansen has lived in the US for many years where he mastered the 'native sound'. He toured Europe in bands like The Rough Riders, Parking Lot Pickers and Chicken Pie. Edwin Herkert is a very well-known banjo player, among others in the leading bluegrass band Groundspeed. Peter Noppen, singer/guitarist, also lost his heart to traditional American music years ago; he also plays in the country rock band Yeeehaa!
